How to Ping computers!

Reason for Pinging a computer on a network:

With pinging one can determine if a computer/network is active. If there is no response form one computer then that computer is either turned of or the network it is on not working.
if no computer is working then the entire network is down. This could mean that the main Hub/Switch is turned of or defective or that Network Settings have been changed or in the case of an DHCP Server that it may be down and not giving out IP Addresses.

How to test Connectivity:

  1. In windows go to the Start Icon located on the bottom left of the screen and click on it.
  2. Next click on run.
  3. In the text field type the command CMD and press enter on the keyboard or click on OK with the mouse.
  4. The DOS Window will come up. this is a Black window with white text in it.
  5. At what is called the command prompt type for example: PING 192.168.111.3
  6. PING is the command to see if a computer is active on the network.
  7. 192.168.111.3 is the computers Network Address. this will be different for every computer. You can get a list of IP addresses form the System Administrator.

If the response is : REQUEST TIMED OUT then there is an issue with the computer with the IP address you just entered.

Contact your SYSTEM Administrator and inform him about the issue or proceed with further instruction you where given in such an event
